HIGH DISTINCTION

 

‘The Vortex’ encapsulates an intervention representational of the disorientation of the mind from reality. Focusing largely on the reflective nature of human action within space, this intervention seeks to materialise reflection; with an objective to physically interpret the abstract concepts of reflection active within the activities of sketching and reading. Featuring both a sensually overwhelming dome ‘vortex’ that plays on the manipulation of light reflectivity; and an inflated floor structure that allows the body to ease and become placid; The Vortex encourages occupants to experience the multiple layers associated with reflection and a disassociation from the present. 

 

This project introduced principles of performative space through performance intervention of Sydney’s 'non-places'. After an in-depth analysis of Manly Ferry Wharf, I was tasked to propose a hypothetical design intervention that aimed to bring purpose into a space that otherwise lacked identity.
