Vila Tugendhat, Brno

This task involved an in-depth analysis of the five layers of construction; structure, envelope, partitions, linings, and systems, in regard to Mies Van De Rohe's Vila Tugendhat.

Vila Tugendhat by Mies Van de Rohe is iconic in its representation of an architectural shift during the late 1920s and 1930s to a call for the house that fully ‘accommodated the man’. Whilst comprehensive analysis of this building has allowed for further understanding of structural details, my studies of the systems within this mammoth structure have also shown critical links regarding the connection between the human and the home. We see through the monumental technological construction of this building just how intertwined Mies became with this contemporary concept that a structure could have the complete capability to improve both the physical and mental health of its inhabitants.

Tugendhat responded directly to this architectural ideology of domesticity, in which a structure has the capacity to become a technological monument in which the promotion of human health is paramount. The structure becomes a key figure in this new found idea that systems have become the main drive behind design; a concept which has very much been carried through to architecture in our modern society.
